Product features

In Japan futons exist since centuries and since they have arrived in Europe it has been instant love. Nowadays this ancient product is more appreciated than ever for it's versatility that allows it to perfectly adapt to our modern living necessities. A futon can be rolled out in the evening on a tatami floor and rolled up during the day to free space. It can also just as well be laid in a bed with a slat or tatami base.

Futon mattresses are also commonly used in transformable sofas that become beds because of their particular batting that makes it possible to fold them into different shapes when used in sofas and then spread them out to create a bed when necessary.

The batting of our Futon Wool Comfort is made with 8 layers pure virgin wool and offers a comfortable medium firm resting support. The structure of this material adapts to the body shape and feels soft to the touch while at the same time offering a firm and sturdy support. Wool is also naturally antibacterial and dust-mites will simply not inhabit it.

The wool in our futons is carded because this process makes the wool much is sturdier than wool in clumps. The carding this material goes through is a simple mechanical process that pulls and combs the wool to mould it into sheets with equally distributed density. This process is necessary to ensure that the futon will keep it's shape over time.

If you are looking for a softer more ergonomic futon we recommend our Futon with Wool & Latex 4.

Colors and side handles

This futon is available in different colors which you can choose from in the product options. The hand made step-stichting and edge seams are the same color as the cover of the futon. We recommend to add the practical fabric side handles, so that the futon can be moved more easily. These will be sewed to both sides of the futon.

Maintenance and care

Futons are quilted mattresses so it's not possible to remove the cover. Possible stains will have to be removed with a stain remover. To protect the Futon from stains and dust, we recommend to add the removable cover with a zipper which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.

Especially in the first perdio of use we recommend to turn the futon over regularly, so that the wool layers maintain an even density as the mattress is slowly compressed due to the body weight. The futon should also occasionally be rolled up and put to air out, so that the humidity which may have been absorbed from the air can escape. It´s best to repeat this operation at every change of season.

Durability of the futon

Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality virgin wool and with proper care they will last for about 10 years.
