Product features
Futon mattresses are appreciated worldwide for their great versatility. In Japan futons they are typically spread on tatami-floors in the evening to sleep. They can of course very well also be used in beds with slats or tatami bases.
The batting of our Futon Cotton & Double Coconut mattress consists of 9 layers of carded cotton and 2 internal layers of breathable rubberized coconut fibre.
This model is a mattress with firm lying comfort: the upper and lower layers of cotton and the two internal layers of coconut determine the firmness.
The batting of this futon is symmetrical, this means that the degree of support and feeling under the body does not change regardless of which side is facing upwards.
The cotton in the batting undergoes a previous process of carding to make it more stable and even than it is in its natural form in puffs. This process, combined with the addition of the two layers of coconut, ensure that this mattress maintains is shape and density perfectly over time.

Colour customisation
The futon cover is available in different colors, which you will find in the above selection. The hand made step-stichting and edge seams are the same color as the cover of the futon.
Maintenance and care
Futons are quilted mattresses so you cannot remove the cover. Possible stains will have to be removed with a stain remover. To protect the Futon from stains and dust, we recommend to add the removable cover which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.
This futon cannot be folded or rolled up because of the two internal layers of coconut. To air out the futon, we suggest to leave it without sheets or bedding in a room with open windows. This will allow moisture which may have been absorbed from the air to escape. It's best to repeat this operation at every change of season.
To ensure that the mattress maintains an even density, we also recommend to turn it over regularly, at least during the first months of use, so as to guarantee that the layers of cotton will be evenly compressed.
Durability of the futon
In Arpel we do not use recycled cotton for the batting of our futons. With recycled cotton we wouldn´t be able to guarantee the desired quality of the fibre, as it is often too worn out. Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality virgin cotton and with proper care they will last up to 10 years.
