Futon Virgin Wool & Coconut

New product

This 14 cm thick futon is made of pure virgin wool. It’s slightly thicker and firmer than traditional japanese futons as it is enriched with an internal layer of coconut fiber that adds firmness and extra support to this mattress. Wool battings are considered to be of first choice as they offer the best support and adapt to the body shape relieving common pressure points.

Product features

High quality japanese futons are mostly appreciated for the fact that they are completely natural and extremely versatile. In Japan it's very common to spread the futons on a tatami floor in the evening to sleep, and roll them up in the morning to use the area otherwise. In Europe we usually use futons as mattresses in beds with slats or tatami bases, or as upholstery in transformable sofa beds. Futons are often used in transformable sofas because their particular batting makes it possible to fold them into different shapes and open them to form a bed when guests come over.

The batting of our Futon Wool & Coconut mattress consists of 6 layers of carded wool and an internal layer of breathable rubberized coir.

This model is a mattress with firm lying comfort: the core layer of coconut fiber offers a very firm support while the layers of wool add extra comfort because they adapt slightly to the body shape relieving stress in the most common pressure points.

Since the layer of coconut is exactly in the middle of the mattress, this batting is defined as symmetrical because the lying comfort doesn't change regardless of which side of the futon is facing upwards.

If you prefer an even firmer mattress, have a look at our Futon with Wool & Double Coconut.

Colors and side handles

You can choose to have this futon produced in one of the many colors we offer in the options above. The hand made step-stitching and edge seams will always be in the same color as the cover of the futon.

If you want to move your futon often, we recommend to add the practical fabric side handles. If you choose this option you will have two handles sewn to each side of the futon.

Maintenance and care

Futons are quilted mattresses so you cannot remove the cover. This means that if stains accidentally form, it's best to clean the futon only with a with a stain remover. To better protect the Futon from daily use, we recommend to add the removable cover with a zipper which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.

Further we recommend to flip the futon over from time to time, so that the wool layers maintain an even density as they are slowly compressed by the weight of the body. You sould also occasionally fold your futon and leave it to air out, so that the humidity which may have been absorbed from the air can escape. It's best to repeat this operation at every change of season.

Durability of the futon

Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality materials and will last up to 10 years with proper care and maintenance.
