Product features

The batting of the Futon Cotton, Latex & Double Coconut mattress consists of 6 layers of carded cotton and an internal double layer of rubberized coconut fiber and another core layer latex.

This model is a mattress with firm lying comfort: the upper and lower layers of cotton and the two internal layers of coconut determine the firmness, whereas the core layer of latex provides the stability of the composition. With this symmetrical mattress, the lying comfort remains the same regardless of which side is facing upwards.

The coconut layer makes this mattress very breathable and the latex has a high density. Thanks to the high-quality of this material composition and the two layers of coconut, this futon maintains its form for many years.

If you wish to have a mattress with an additional winter side we recommend the Futon Cotton, Latex, Double Coconut & Wool.

Futon-mattresses are especially appreciated for their versatility. In Japan futons are spread on tatami-floors for sleeping at night and during the day they are rolled up to allow to use the area otherwise. Futons can very well also be used in beds with slat frames or tatami.

Colors and side handles

The futon cover is available in different colors, which you will find in the above selection. The hand made step-stitching and edge seams are the same color as the cover of the futon. We recommend to add the practical fabric side handles, so that the futon can be moved more easily. These are sewed to both sides of the futon.

Maintenance and care

Futons are quilted mattresses so that you cannot remove the cover. Possible stains will have to be removed with a stain remover. To protect the Futon from stains and dust, we recommend to add the removable cover which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.

This futon cannot be folded or rolled up because it contains two layers of coconut fiber in the batting which make it quite stiff. To air the futon out, simply pull off the bedding and leave it on the bed for a few hours with a window open, then turn it over an repeat the same operation in the other side. Like this any moisture which may have been absorbed over time will be dissipated in the air. It's best to repeat this operation at every change of season.

To ensure that the futon maintains it's shape perfectly, we recommend to turn it over several times - especially during the first months of use - to allow the layers of cotton to be compressed evenly under the weight of the body

Durability of the futon

In Arpel we do not use recycled cotton for the batting of our futons. With recycled cotton we wouldn't be able to guarantee the desired quality of the fibre, as it is often too worn out. Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality virgin cotton and with proper care they will last up to 10 years.
