Product features

The batting of our Futon Wool, Cotton & Double Coconut consists of 6 layers of carded virgin wool, 2 internal layers of coconut fiber and 3 central layers of cotton.

This futon offers a very firm lying comfort which perfectly supports the spine encouraging a correct posture during sleep thanks to the addition of two layers of coir. The soft virgin wool batting adapts to the body shape relieving stress under the common pressure points such as shoulders and hips allowing you to enjoy deeper and longer stages of sleep.

An ideal mattress base for those who wish to emphasize the firmness of this mattress is a tatami mat. Our tatami mats can be used as mattress bases in our japanese style beds or they can be placed directly on the floor as is typically done in Japan.

Coconut fiber, wool and cotton are all extremely breathable materials; the spaces between the fibers allow air to circulate through the mattress and dissipate any moisture absorbed from the body keeping you fresh and dry during sleep.

The batting of this mattress is perfectly symmetrical as the two layers of coconut are placed at an even distance from the upper and lower edge of the mattress. This means that it offers the same degree of support and lying comfort on each side.

The carding process that the wool and cotton undergo makes them much more stable than they would be in their natural form in puffs because it pulls and spreads the fibers evenly. This process combined with the addition of firm coconut fiber layers guarantee that this futon perfectly maintains its density and shape over time.

The futon cover is available in different colors, which you will find in the above selection. The hand made step-stitching and edge seams will be in the same color chosen for the cover of the futon. If you need to move the mattress often, we suggest to accessorize it with our practical fabric side handles. These will be sewn to both sides of the futon.

Maintenance and care

True japanese futons are quilted mattresses so it's not possible to remove the cover. Possible stains will therefore have to be removed with a stain remover. To protect the Futon from stains and dust, we recommend to add the removable cover which opens on three sides. This cover is in pure ecru cotton and can be placed in a washing machine whenever needed. You will find it in the Accessories section.

To air the mattress out from time to time, we recommend to fold it and leave it in a well aired room or even outside on a sunny day. It's best to repeat this operation at least during every change of season.

To help this futon maintain its shape, we also suggest to turn it over regularly, at least during the first months of use, to make sure that the layers of wool keep an even density throughout the mattress as they become slowly compressed due to the weight of the body.

Durability of the futon

Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality materials such as virgin wool and cotton and coconut, so with proper care they will easily last up to 10 years.
