Product features

Futons exist in Japan since the 13th century and when they arrived in Europe it was instant love. Nowadays this ancient product is more appreciated than ever for it's versatility that allows it to perfectly adapt to our modern style of living. Traditionally futons were rolled out in the evening on a tatami floor and rolled up during the day to free space but they can also just as well be laid in a bed with a slat or tatami base.

Futon mattresses are also great bases for transformable sofas that become beds because of their particular batting that makes it possible to fold them into different shapes when used in sofas and then spread them out to create a bed when necessary.

The batting of our Futon Wool & Latex 4 mattress consists of 6 layers of carded wool and an internal 4 cm thick core layer of latex. The presence of several layers of wool determine the firmness, whereas the ergonomic latex insert balances the composition so that this futon adapts to the body shape and feels soft to the touch while at the same time offering a high level of support. Wool is also naturally a hostile environment for dust-mites that will simply not inhabit it.

This futon is perfectly symmetrical. This means that the degree of support does not change according to which side is facing upwards.

The wool in this futon is carded through is a simple mechanical process that pulls and combs it forming sheets with equally distributed density making it much more stable than untreated wool in clumps. This feature combines with the structure of the layer of latex ensures that this futon will maintain it's shape perfectly over time.

If you are looking for richer, more ergonomic futon with a thicker layer of latex we recommend the Futon in Wool & Latex 8.

We recommend to add the practical fabric side handles, so that the futon can be moved more easily. These will be sewn to both sides of the futon.

Maintenance and care

Futons are quilted mattresses it is not possible remove the cover. Any stains that may form will have to be removed with a stain remover. To give your Futon extra protection, we recommend to add the removable cover with a zipper which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.

Further we recommend to turn the futon over from time to time, so that the wool layers maintain their density. The futon should also occasionally be rolled up and put to air out, so that the humidity which may have been absorbed from the air can escape. It´s best to repeat this operation at every change of season.

Durability of the futon

Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality virgin wool and high density natural latex so with proper care they will last for up to 10 years.
