The batting of the Futon Cotton, Latex, Double Coconut & Virgin Wool mattress consists of 5 layers of carded cotton, one layer of wool with two internal layers of coconut fiber and a core layer of latex.
This model is a mattress with firm, well balanced lying comfort: the presence of one layer of virgin wool and several layers of cotton as well as the coir layers determine the firmness, whereas the ergonomic double latex insert balances the composition.
With this symmetrical mattress the lying comfort and level of support remain the same even regardless of which side of the futon is facing upwards. Additionally, this futon offers a summer side and a winter side. The latter contains a final layer of soft virgin wool to keep the body comfortably warm.
The latex has a high density and the coconut layer makes this mattress very breathable. Thanks to the high-quality of this material composition this futon maintains its form for many years.
Futon-mattresses are especially appreciated for their versatility. In Japan futons are spread on tatami-floors for sleeping at night and during the day they are rolled up to allow to use the area otherwise. Futons can very well also be used in beds with slat frames or tatami.
This japanese futon is available as a single, french or double mattress.

The futon cover is available in different colors, which you will find in the above selection. The hand made step-stitching and edge seams are the same color as the cover of the futon. We recommend to add the practical fabric side handles, so that the futon can be moved more easily. These are sewed to both sides of the futon.
Futons are quilted mattresses so that you cannot remove the cover. Possible stains will have to be removed with a stain remover. To protect the Futon from stains and dust, we recommend to add the removable cover which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.
This futon cannot be rolled up because of the two layers of coir in the batting. It is nevertheless important to air out the futon at least two or three times a year left to air out. To do this, simply remove the bedding for about an hour and leave the mattress on the bed with the window open, then flip it over and let the other side air out for at least another hour. Like this any moisture which may have been absorbed from the air can be eliminated. It´s best to repeat this operation at every change of season.
To guarantee that the futon holds its form over time, we suggest to turn it over regularly during the first months of use so that the layers of cotton will maintain an even density as they become slightly compressed due to the weight of the body.
In Arpel we do not use recycled cotton for the batting of our futons. With recycled cotton we wouldn't be able to guarantee the desired quality of the fibre, as it is often too worn out. Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality virgin cotton and with proper care they will last up to 10 years.
