Product features

The batting of the Futon Cotton, Double Coconut & Virgin Wool mattress consists of 8 layers of carded cotton and one layer of wool with two internal layers of coconut fiber which has breathable qualities.

This model is a mattress with firm lying comfort: the presence of one layer of wool and several layers of cotton as well as the two coir layers determine the firmness.

With this symmetrical mattress the degree of support and lying comfort remains the same even if you turn it over. Additionally, it has one summer side and a winter side. The latter contains a final layer of virgin wool and keeps the body comfortably warm during cold seasons. Thanks to the double layer of coconut fiber this futon maintains its form for many years.

Futon-mattresses are especially appreciated for their versatility. In Japan futons are spread on tatami-floors for sleeping at night and during the day they are rolled up to allow to use the area otherwise. Futons can very well also be used in beds with slat frames or tatami.

Colour customisation

The futon cover is available in different colors, which you will find in the above selection. The hand made step-stitching and edge seams are the same color as the cover of the futon.

Maintenance and care

Futons are quilted mattresses so you cannot remove the cover. Possible stains will have to be removed with a stain remover. To protect the Futon from stains and dust, we recommend to add the removable cover which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of the same material as the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.

It's not possible to fold this futon as it's too thick and firm because of the presence of the two layers of coconut in the batting. To air it out simply leave it without bedding for a few hours in a room with the window open and turn it over once during this operation to air out both sides. Like this the moisture which may have been absorbed from the air can escape. It's best to repeat this operation at every change of season.

To ensure that this futon maintains an even density over time, it's also advisable to turn it over every few weeks, at least during the first months of use, to make sure that the layers of cotton are evenly compressed under the weight of the body

Durability of the futon

In Arpel we do not use recycled cotton for the batting of our futons. With recycled cotton we wouldn't be able to guarantee the desired quality of the fiber, as it is often too worn out. Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality virgin cotton and with proper care they will last up to 10 years.
