Product features

Our futons are ideal for those searching for a 100% natural mattress that improves the quality of sleep. This futon can be used in traditional beds with slats or japanese style beds with tatami bases. It can also just as well be spread on a tatami floor as is typically done in japan.

This futon offers a medium firm resting comfort: the external layers of wool adapt to the body shape relieving pressure form typical stress points such as shoulders and hips while the internal layers of latex and coconut give extra support and ensure a correct position of the spine and joints during sleep.

The batting of this futon is described asymmetric because it offers a different degree of support and resting comfort according to which side is facing upwards. If you position the futon with the layer of latex above the layer of coconut, the futon will feel softer and more ergonomic under the body. If you position it so that the layer of coconut is above the layer of latex then the mattress will feel firmer and more compact under the body.

The virgin wool and cotton batting is naturally highly breathable because these materials absorb the moisture produced by the body during sleep and dissipate it in the air. The layer of coconut is inserted not only to offer support but also to enhance the breathability of the mattress even more thanks to the thousands of tiny spaces between the fibers that allow air to pass and circulate through the mattress.

Thanks to its rich composition, this futon will keep it's shape perfectly over time. In fact, the carding process the wool and cotton go through makes them much more stable and even than they would be in their natural form in puffs and the addition of the latex and coconut layers make this mattress as whole very sturdy.

Colors and side handles

This futon can be produced with a cover in different colors, which you will find in the above selection. The hand made step-stitching and edge seams will be in the same color as the cover of the futon. We recommend to add the practical fabric side handles, if you want to move the futon often. If you choose this option, a pair of handles will be sewn to each side of the futon.

Maintenance and care

Futons are quilted mattresses so the cover cannot be removed. Possible stains will have to be cleaned with a dry stain remover. To protect the Futon from dirt and dust, we recommend to add the removable and washable cover with a zipper which opens on three sides. You will find this in the Accessories section. The removable cover is made of ecru cotton just like the futon cover and can be ordered in a different color.

Further we recommend to turn the futon over from time to time, so that the layers of wool maintain an even density as they are become slightly compressed due to the weight of the body. The futon should also occasionally be rolled up and put to air out, so that the moisture which may have been absorbed over time can escape. It’s best to perform this operation at least every change of season.

Durability of the futon

Arpel mattresses are made of high-quality materials such as virgin wool, cotton, high density latex and rubberized coconut fiber so with proper care they will last at least up to 10 years.
